Pet travel

Moving your dog or cat to Italy? Make it easy.

Clear requirements, trusted door-to-door pet transport, and help registering your pet once you arrive.

1 to 2 months

Start planning at least this far ahead. A titer test can take four months or more.

No quarantine

Italy does not require quarantine for pets that meet the requirements.

3 to 6 hours

Typical customs clearance on arrival, most often through Rome, Venice or Milan.

What your pet needs

The requirements, explained simply.

These are the core rules for dogs and cats entering Italy in 2026.

Microchip

An ISO-compliant 15-digit microchip, implanted before the most recent rabies vaccine. If the order is reversed, the vaccine does not count.

Rabies vaccine

Given at least 21 days before arrival and still valid when you land. Any gap in the vaccination history restarts the 21-day clock.

EU health certificate

Signed by a government-accredited vet within 10 days of arrival. From October 1, 2026, pets from outside the EU need the updated EU certificate format.

Original documents

Paper originals only, not scans: health certificate, rabies certificate, microchip statement, fit to fly certificate and owner declaration.

The 5-day rule

You must travel within five days before or after your pet, or authorize someone else to accompany them, to keep the move non-commercial.

Rabies titer test

Only needed for pets from countries the EU considers higher risk. Pets from the US, UK, Canada and Australia generally do not need one.

Rules can change and vary by country of origin. Check current requirements with your vet and the Italian authorities before you travel.

Questions & answers

Good to know.

Can snub-nosed breeds travel to Italy?

Often yes, but many airlines restrict cargo travel for them, so check your options early. Our partner can advise.

How many pets can I bring?

Up to five pets can travel under the non-commercial rules. More than five makes the move commercial, with stricter paperwork.

How old does my pet need to be?

Pets under three months cannot enter. The rabies vaccine must be given at 12 weeks or older, so puppies and kittens are usually around four months old before they can travel.

Does Italy have breed restrictions?

No. Dogs must be on a leash no longer than 1.5 meters in urban and public areas, and owners should carry a muzzle.

Do I need to register my pet once I arrive?

Yes. Pets living in Italy are registered with the local ASL, licensed where required, and can then get an Italian pet passport. We can help with all of it, just email us.
