The Italian Digital Nomad Visa is perfect for freelancers, self-employed gurus, and remote warriors alike. Approved in April 2024, this visa is Italy's warm welcome to digital wanderers wanting to work amidst its rich history and stunning landscapes.
Whether you're freelancing or clocking in remotely for a company, this visa could be your ticket to la dolce vita.
Italy's introduction of the Digital Nomad Visa marks a significant step forward to opening the doors to one of the most sought-after countries in the world, but that was otherwise very difficult to get into.
Recognizing the growing trend of remote work, the Italian government aims to attract digital workers who can contribute to the local economy without displacing local jobs. This visa provides a legal pathway for remote workers to live in Italy for up to a year, with the possibility of renewal.
The Reason for the Digital Nomad Visa
Eligibility: If you’re using tech to work remotely, whether as a freelancer or an employee, this visa is calling your name. You could be working for a company based in Italy or anywhere around the globe.
Who's Who: In the world of this visa, ‘digital nomads’ are freelancers, and ‘remote workers’ are, well, remote employees. The criteria are pretty much the same for both, though there are a few differences when it comes time to apply.
Skills and Education: You need to show off some academic or professional credentials—which must include a university degree of at least three years, or a professional license.
Experience in the Field: If you don’t have a degree, you will need up to five years of experience to make up for it and at least six months in your current role. Significant industry experience *may be accepted, but it is not certain how the consulates will respond.
Work Contract: This is where it differs. Remote workers, you’ll need to provide a current employment contract or job offer that matches your high-level skills. Digital nomads will need to show solid proof of your client engagements.
Criminal Background: If you are a remote worker, your employer needs to provide an affidavit about not being involved in specific immigration crimes in the last five years. Some Consulates may also ask for your criminal record too.
Annual Income: Show that you earn at least EUR 28,000 annually if you are applying just for yourself. More, if you have a family. This could be from any source—not necessarily your job—Just check how your specific Italian Consulate views these sources.
Housing in Italy: You’ll need proof of where you’re going to live, like a lease or property deed. An airbnb or hotel will not work.
Health Insurance: As in other visas, Italy expects you to have a private travel health insurance.
Passport: Your passport must be valid for the duration of the visa (365 days).
Visa Duration and Renewal: The visa will give you a permit to stay (permesso di soggiorno) for one year, but don’t worry, you can renew the permit every year.
Bring the Family: If you are married and have kids, this visa allows the family to join you.
Where to Apply: You’ll need to apply at the Italian Consulate in the jurisdiction that you live. You cannot apply directly in Italy.
Waiting Time: You should expect to wait between 90 - 120 days for an approval from the Consulate.
