The Permesso di Soggiorno (permit to stay) is your official permit to stay and is an additional document that you must get after arriving in Italy.

If you are arriving in Italy on a Visa, you will need to report to the Post Office within 8 days of arrival and take a Kit per la richiesta di Permesso di Soggiorno (Permesso di Soggiorno). You will then need to fill out the kit, include all documents, visas, forms, payment slip and application to be able to submit it for your appointment at the local police (Questura).
